Day 2 is Done

Day 2 is done but not without extreme heat and pain. We started walking at 7:30 in Robertsdale, Alabama passing by our camp in Stapleton and after an hour plus break we headed on toward Bay Minette. A thunderstorm went all around us between Stapleton and Bay Minette, and we didn't get in danger nor did we get wet. The temperature did cool down with the clouds and the breeze. Thank goodness because our thermometer on the pack hit 104 just before lunch. There should be a picture uploaded in a little while under the I-10 bridge over highway 59. The only shade in a 14 mile stretch. By the way total miles walked today was 20 1/2. There is a picture of us with the mother of our hostess, she is a cook in the bakery at Burris Farm Market in Loxley. She had just taken up a fresh batch of cinnamon rolls before we walked in. Of course we had to have one and they were delicious. There is a Forest Service office with a Fire Tower beside our route and we decided to cross the highway and enjoy the shade, treat and bandage blisters, and hopefully climb the tower. No one was there and it didn't dawn on us that it was lunch hour. The steps of course had a no trespassing sign right at the ground. We certainly had our conversation of do we go up or not. Intelligence prevailed because a ranger pulled up when we were preparing to leave. We certainly went and introduced ourselves because we are having a great time meeting people. Of course after the introduction I had to ask the possibility of climbing the tower. Cautioning that there were loose and weak steps and a huge wasp nest at the door, and of course saying "Don't fall", we could go! The rest is history and pictures to show. A picture was made about half way up of the highway from the direction we had come. Then a picture of us at the top as high as we could go without disturbing the wasp nest. Our shuttle driver met us at the Stapleton Post Office and WALKED with us to the Fire Department. When we finished up the walk today, back at the fire station some of our new friends were here to greet us as they were having a meeting tonight at the fire station.
This blog is simply to tell you some of the stories as we go along. After the walk we will compare our notes and present something in better detail. I have hit a wireless network tonight and it is much quicker so I will try to upload many more pictures. All the details of stories will appear later. Thank you for following us and the encouraging words are helping us progress. More hopefully sometime tomorrow. Tomorrow is when we are moving campsites. It will be a long tough day, we will have to see, and try real hard to get a posting done.

By the Beach ready to set out on the journey!

Some of the Firefighters

Leaving Evergreen on Saturday

Day 1 in the books

Sorry we are so late getting this posted tonight. It has been a Great and Busy day. We have some pictures that will be attached and bear with us because this is our first attempt at this blogging.
When we arrived at the Fire Department on Saturday afternoon, they were out fighting a house fire. Therefore, when they returned we got to meet several of the members and had an opportunity to visit and chat. They really had some interesting stories to tell us.
We started today by waking before the alarm clocks went off. We slept great in our camp at the Stapleton Volunteer Fire Department. However, the excitement of the venture had us awake and ready to go. Hugh, our shuttle driver today, carried us to Gulf Shores for the start. We have a picture of us at the waters edge after we stepped down and put a hand, (not a toe) in the water. We started walking at 7:45 and about 8 1/2 miles in at 10:40 we were walking in front of the Genesis Church so we went in for the 10:30 worship service. We enjoyed a very inspirational Praise and Worship service. We traveled on completing 21 3/4 miles today. The temps reached 100 degrees on us today and to say it was hot is an understatement. A couple of blisters and hot spots on feet have been experienced but we are moving forward. We have met some very interesting people and have had a tremendous amount of encouragement from strangers met along the way and from our network of friends. (Our email address for the walk is: walkupalabama@yahoo.com and we love hearing from you.) We got back to camp at about 5:45 and hurriedly got cleaned up to visit the Stapleton Baptist Church 6:00 worship service. Our support and shuttle driver Hugh is a member there and after the worship service we had a late dinner with Hugh, Pastor and Youth Pastor. Wonderful people and quite a time of fellowship.
I am going to try to upload some pictures that were taken. Maybe that process will work ok. We are not sure how to place captions. So look for future posting as to who the people are. We will try to be back in camp with a little more time to organize our notes and thoughts tomorrow night. Thanks for taking the time to follow us and sending encouragement.

A Walk Up Alabama

Cousins – in – law (Brothers in Christ) David Bass and Dalton Campbell are starting the venture of a walk up the state of Alabama. David is a walker/runner for physical conditioning purposes. Walking a long distance is not a new experience for David. David has joined his dear friend Rick Hagans in some of his walks. Rick is a minister from Auburn, Alabama, founder of Harvest Evangelism and has walked across about 29 states as of today. Rick started walking across states back in 1996 to raise awareness and soliciting shoes to carry on his evangelistic effort in Mexico.

The fourth quarter of 2008 brought life challenging and life changing issues in David’s life. David was diagnosed with chronic leukemia (CLL) in November, 2008. While the testing to confirm this diagnosis was being done, David’s father was developing some physical problems that were undetermined. From David’s walking with Rick and having read “A Walk across America” by Peter Jenkins, he started conjuring up thoughts of a long walk. One Sunday afternoon in January 2009, David called Dalton. David affectionately calls Dalton “Bobe”. The phone call started like this: “Bobe, you know I have walked some with Rick Hagans, and I’ve been reading this book about a guy that walked across America. I want to do some kind of walk but not as far out as these two guys. I have a lot on my mind and to help me keep focused I want to start planning a walk in Alabama, maybe crossing the state in several walks. I wanted to find some one that was physically able to walk and crazy enough to go with me some.” Dalton’s reply was “Dave, you’ve called the right person.” During that telephone conversation Dalton agreed that he wanted to walk with David all the way. It was agreed that day to start in south Baldwin County the last week of June ending the first leg at Evergreen, Alabama on July 3, 2009.

During the next weeks and months the plan was discussed while visiting in person or via telephone discussions. On February 4, 2009 David’s father died while hospitalized for testing. Therefore, since God had blessed David and Dalton with wonderful Christian fathers it is only fitting for this Walk Up Alabama to be in memory of Morris Bass and J. D. Campbell. The walk will begin on Sunday, June 28, 2009 (one week following Fathers Day) at the Gulf of Mexico in Gulf Shores, Alabama and arriving Evergreen, Alabama on July 3, 2009 traveling approximately 123 miles. The ultimate goal is to reach the state of Tennessee. The remaining sections of the walk have not been planned or scheduled at this time.

Hugh and Debbie Harris are very dear friends of Dalton who live in Stapleton, Alabama. Hugh and Debbie are critical support persons for the logistics of the walk through Baldwin County assisting in shuttling walkers to and from camp to starting and ending walking locations. Hugh and Debbie are self-employed business people and committed Christians. Hugh is a volunteer fireman with the Stapleton Volunteer Fire Department. Hugh and Debbie are members of Stapleton Baptist Church. They have recruited logistical help from the members of the Fire Department and the Church.

This walk is not a solicitation of sponsors. There is not any corporate backing. Any expenses for the walk are the responsibility of and are taken care of by David and Dalton. Of course, there is a tremendous amount of volunteered time and support which will make the walk a successful venture. The walk is giving David and Dalton a tremendous amount of time for continued bonding and exerting physical energy in memory of two wonderful Dads.

Anyone that is physically able to walk is welcomed to join David and Dalton for a day, a mile, or a block. If you feel inspired from any of this walk or venture and would like to make a contribution to your favorite charity, please do so. Please make your contribution in memory of Morris Bass and/or J. D. Campbell.

David’s and Dalton’s suggestions for contributions are:
1. Rick Hagan’s / Harvest Evangelism
2. The Gideons
3. American Cancer Society
4. American Heart Association
5. Your Local Volunteer Fire Department.
