THURSDAY - APRIL 18, 2013

David actually arrived in Auburn on Wednesday night and Thursday morning he scouted out the route we had chosen north of Auburn.  David’s friend Kenneth Chance had scouted the route from Union Springs to Auburn and reported to us in detail by mile markers the different landscapes and structures we would pass.  I met David at the ending point for a 10.3 afternoon walk at lunch time.  We then drove to Union Springs to eat lunch and then officially start walking.  Leaving David’s car at Subway where we ate and to start the walk, we began walking at 12:45 p.m.
Of course, walking from Union Springs toward Tuskegee, there was much distance that matched the term “middle of nowhere!” giving us plenty of time to catch up with all we had going on.  It had been many months since we had the opportunity to visit.
We were very appreciative of the scouting that Ken had done for us, however, we did tease him with a hard time.  He had on the scouting report that about 6 miles in there was a store at Ft. Davis.  He just failed to tell us it closed in 1960!  Since there was no ice cold drink at the store, we took our pack-off break at the cover of the Post Office.  A picture of the depot and the post office is on another post.
Upon completion of the afternoon walk arriving at the van, we drove back to Union Springs to get David’s car. Then we drove the route for Friday checking mileages as we drove to Base Camp at Chewacla State Park.  We had some folks that wanted to walk on Friday at different times so we were checking to see mileages for them to leave a vehicle and most important was where to eat lunch on Friday and what was the mileage to that point.
We made our way to Chewacla and set up a base camp.  In another post we shared about watching Jason and Stephen play Ultimate Frisbee.  However on this post is a picture of  the Bass men at the intramural field.

THURSDAY - ENTERED MACON COUNTY - FT DAVIS, AL

Entering Macon County started our 8th county to cross.  Just inside Macon County we went through FT Davis, AL that I did not know existed.  A store that closed many years ago, that we didn't get a picture of.  A depot that is in need of restoration however you could see the track bed but it had been long removed.  A picture of David under the entrance cover to FT Davis US Post Office. And then a picture of each of us at the van at the end of 10.3 miles in 90 degree temps!

Starting point for Leg 3 was a block away from the Famous Bird Dog Monument in downtown Union
Springs where 2nd Leg ended.

SATURDAY UPDATE - "A DAY" IN AUBURN!

Saturday has been a beautiful day and a fun day.  Our starting point was about 10 miles south of Toomers Corner.  We had a good morning of walking and made it in to downtown for lunch.  We saw several of David's friends and made new acquaintances along the way.  We spent a great deal of time hanging out around the rolling of the trees and around downtown but still managed to make it up to Highway 280 logging 15 miles for the day.

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY UPDATE

First day of Leg 3 started at lunch yesterday (Thursday).  We started in Union Springs after eating at the Subway at the intersection of hiway 29 and 82.  Leg 2 stopped at the Subway.  The afternoon walk was great with good weather conditions and traffic conditions.  Although it was a beautiful afternoon it did get very warm pounding the pavement. The temp recorded on my backpack on the highway reached 90 degrees.  We walked 10.3 miles in under 4 hours of walking.  After completion of the walk, shuttling the vehicles, scouting and measuring Fridays walk, we set up a base camp at Chewacla State Park.  After camp was set up David and I met Jason and Stephen and some of their friends at Veggies To Go for dinner and then had the opportunity to watch Jason and Stephen play in an intramural "ultimate frisbee" game.  If you ever get the chance to watch one of these games, take it in.  It is a fun action packed game to watch.  So the late night caused no posting on the blog.
Second day on Friday.  Rains were predicted to move in early this morning.  However, we were fortunate to get our packs loaded and everything ready for the day at base camp before the rains began.  But when the rain started it was here and steady, not to mention it was cold..  The temp on my backpack was struggling to get to 50 degrees.  Our stopping point on Thursday and starting point this morning was about 10 miles south of Tuskegee.  We started actually walking at 9:10 Even with the rain we got in 19 miles.  We had lunch on Friday in downtown Tuskegee at The Coop restaurant.
Thursday night we were late getting to camp and bed and on Friday night I was sitting in camp operating laptop and wifi on battery source and the wifi battery died.  Therefore, the writing and posting tonight (saturday night) is in the laundry room at the campground.  I have many pictures downloaded and will start posting soon.

IN MEMORY OF KEVIN R. PUTNEY

David and Dalton are walking Leg 3 of A Walk Up Alabama in celebration of the life of Kevin R. Putney (May 29, 1991 - March 29, 2011).  With love and sympathy for the Putney Family, we are walking this leg in memory of Kevin.

2013 brings 3rd Leg of The Walk

Schedules have clicked and the 3rd leg of the walk is about to become reality! Plans and Routes are very flexible at this time. Starting point is Thursday April 18th in Union Springs at the ending point of 2nd leg. We will be following US 29 north into Tuskegee, staying with 29 into Auburn. Traveling College St. leading to State hiway 147 out of Auburn crossing US 280 on 147 to intersect with US 431 headed north to Lafayette. When we started this venture, many people ask us what was the cause we were promoting. Actually, from the start there wasn't one. Then we started thinking and talking about it and have chosen a charitable group to bring attention to as we walk. As you possibly already know David was diagnosed in November 2008 with Chronic Leukemia (CLL). If you are new to the blog and following our walk, I encourage you to go through the archives here and read the original posts from the start in 2009. With that being said, David and I have chosen for your consideration to learn more about and to make a contribution to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Thank you for your interest in our walk and following along with the blog. However, you are also invited to come join us along the way and walk a distance with us. We will be attempting to post updates along the way so stay tuned! Happy Hiking!
