Support team at base camp for this leg was Shelton Hamrac
and Victor Howell. Shelton, Victor and
Dalton arrived at Alabama Gold Camp to set up the base camp. None of us were aware of or had been to the
Alabama Gold Camp. It is located outside
the city of Lineville, Alabama actually just across the county line in Randolph
County about a mile from Cragford, Alabama.
Alabama Gold Camp is a well kept secret in the state of Alabama. We did not know there was a place in Alabama
where you could pan for gold with an actual chance of finding some.
Shelton and Victor trailered their motorcycles to the camp
and on Friday afternoon after we set up camp we rode the bikes around and
located cut-through county roads for short-cuts to shuttle walkers.
Austin Wimberly arrived at camp next and then it wasn’t long
until David Bass made it into camp. We
got the base camp all set up and ready for the next few days with cold weather
expected and with a strong prediction of rain to come in.
We chose to drive in to Ashland for dinner versus cooking at
camp. Small sandwich shop restaurant on
the square named Nellie’s! Several
stories told around the table as it was a great time of fellowship.
Then it was back to camp for preparation for a good night’s
rest to start the walk on Saturday morning.
