David
actually arrived in Auburn on Wednesday night and Thursday morning he scouted
out the route we had chosen north of Auburn.
David’s friend Kenneth Chance had scouted the route from Union Springs
to Auburn and reported to us in detail by mile markers the different landscapes
and structures we would pass. I met
David at the ending point for a 10.3 afternoon walk at lunch time. We then drove to Union Springs to eat lunch
and then officially start walking.
Leaving David’s car at Subway where we ate and to start the walk, we
began walking at 12:45 p.m.
Of
course, walking from Union Springs toward Tuskegee, there was much distance
that matched the term “middle of nowhere!” giving us plenty of time to catch up
with all we had going on. It had been
many months since we had the opportunity to visit.
We
were very appreciative of the scouting that Ken had done for us, however, we
did tease him with a hard time. He had
on the scouting report that about 6 miles in there was a store at Ft.
Davis. He just failed to tell us it
closed in 1960! Since there was no ice cold
drink at the store, we took our pack-off break at the cover of the Post
Office. A picture of the depot and the
post office is on another post.
Upon
completion of the afternoon walk arriving at the van, we drove back to Union
Springs to get David’s car. Then we drove the route for Friday checking
mileages as we drove to Base Camp at Chewacla State Park. We had some folks that wanted to walk on
Friday at different times so we were checking to see mileages for them to leave
a vehicle and most important was where to eat lunch on Friday and what was the
mileage to that point.
We
made our way to Chewacla and set up a base camp. In another post we shared about watching
Jason and Stephen play Ultimate Frisbee.
However on this post is a picture of
the Bass men at the intramural field.
